The mogwai began as a type of experimental monster created by the Ssu-Ling known as Huanglong. Once the technique of implementing them was perfected they were utilized all across the galaxy in their quest for dominance.
Not every species is compatible with the formula that creates them. Regardless of species, however, all mogwai look more or less the same. They have some slight visual differences based on species and the appearance of the individual used to create the mogwai. This is largely apparent in colouration, height, and number of appendages.
The original formula was tested on humans, as the Ssu-Ling originated on Earth and they had no shortage of test subjects at hand. As a result, it works best if the individual they’re using it on is from a species that is physically similar to humans. The more alien the less likely it is to work properly. There have been cases where the subject began the transformation process but then exploded.
Huanglong recommends that the formula not be used against the swaidel, traioshians, equashil, or viellar. Cyvvan can be converted if the need is high enough, although their rocky skin makes the transformation difficult.
