There's an abundance of gold in the mines.

The mines have always been unstable, but the miners feel the wealth of gold they pull from it to be worth the risk. After a major mine shaft collapsed in 376, killing 18 people, the queen declared it unsafe and had it sealed off. Some people have found a way in to get at the mines, but many don't come back out again.
